CLINICAL

At the Chemolingot sub-County Hospital Kala-azar patients are triaged, diagnosed through rapid tests, and those confirmed through microscopy are put into a standardized treatment regime. Full biometric and biochemical data for confirmed positive patients are collected to determine patient-centered clinical intervention. These patients are hospitalized for the full duration of treatment that ranges between 9 days and 30 days, or longer. Clinical measures are assessed regularly to determine treatment outcomes including to assess initial cure. Patients are followed up to 6 months as per the global and national Kala-azar guidelines for test of final cure. Prognosis of Kala-azar patients has many spillover to the treatment of other conditions including leveraging health systems aspects to expand access to diagnosis for other diseases due to the needed supplies, training and data.
